Broome County Health Department Launches New H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) Website

H1N1Virus

BINGHAMTON, NYWith the resurgence of the H1N1 flu (swine flu) this fall, the health department has created a website for people in our community to find the most current information regarding the virus from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the New York State Department of Health. Due to the novelty of the H1N1 virus and the media attention it has received, the health department is providing information about the virus and how it affects the people of Broome County.

The website provides frequently asked questions, local and national H1N1 flu related news feeds, risk reduction strategies, and an information request form for users to contact the health department with questions or concerns regarding the virus or the vaccine. When the H1N1 flu vaccine becomes available, schedules for public clinics will be posted on the website.

Facebook, You Tube and Twitter social networking applications are being utilized to reach student populations who are one of the high risk target populations for vaccination. “We believe that social networking sites will increasingly be a great communication tool in our ongoing public health education campaigns.  We intend to promote the use of these so that the people in our community can be connected to our health information and research,” said Claudia Edwards, Public Health Director for the Broome County Heath Department.
